The topic I chose for my Digital artifact is Angry bird. It has over 50 million downloads and also, 200 million minutes of game play each day, Angry Birds and its sequel Angry Birds 2 by Rovio are  two of the most addictive and popular mobile games of their time. While most other games struggle to maintain their place in the increasing app market competition, these two games are still doing great in the market

The very first Angry bird game was from all the way back in Dec 2009 and within a few weeks this game became popular amongst the public. Within a decade downloads reached from a few millions to 4.5 billion and counting globally. Within a decade from all the games most loved and downloaded games were Angry bird EPIC, Angry bird Star Wars, Angry bird GO, Angry bird transformers, Angry bird 2.

For those who don’t have a clue what Angry Birds is all about, here is a quick synopsis. The game involves employing a slingshot to propel small cannonball-shaped birds with really bad attitudes at rather fragile glass and timber houses populated by basically catatonic green pigs. The basic thrust of the game is to bring about the demise of the pigs as quickly and expertly as possible by collapsing the pigs’ houses on top of their helmeted heads. .

For some of us we are very familiar with the game, some might even say it brings a certain nostalgia to the table. I personally have played and loved the game. My favorite character out of all the birds was Chuck, a yellow angry bird. Chuck is known to be one of the fastest and restless birds with capability of running at 100mph.

The game is Simple yet engaging. Angry Birds’ simple interaction model is easy to learn because it allows the user to quickly develop a mental model of the game’s interaction methodology, core strategy and scoring processes. It is engaging, in fact addictive, due to the carefully scripted expansion of the user’s mental model of the strategy component and incremental increases in problem/solution methodology. These little birds are packed with clever behaviors that expand the user’s mental model at just the point when game-level complexity is increased.

The mobile app growth of Angry Birds didn’t stop with gaming revenues. The brand became so popular that Rovio was able to expand it into merchandising and even launch the Angry Birds movie in theatres. The movie was loved by kids and helped the game gain more popularity amongst the age group of toddlers, though they could not play or understand the game they then become familiar with it.

During our initial stage of creating content and doing research I came up with an idea of creating a poll on Instagram to gather information and public review about the game. This way I was able to interact with a larger number of people. Forming questions to ask my audience in the polls, that they answered on a weekly basis.. These weekly Instagram polls have also led me to explore angles that I thought did not even exist. Through my polls and questionnaires, i found out that a lot of people played this game because the destruction helped them with their anger issues, it helped them to keep them calm. This was surprising because it was an angle I had never heard or thought about. These polls gave me a chance to talk to people about things that had never been part of a conversation before.
